FABRICATION OF ELECTROSTATIC ACTUATOR FOR DUAL STAGE SLIDER IN

HARD DISK DRIVE HEADS

Recently, HDD technology has been rapidly advancing with very high storage density of more than 100 Gb/in. The track pitch on HDD media is now reduced below 100 nm and tracking problems has become an important issue [3]. Currently HDD use a single large actuator carrying many read/write heads and driven by a voice coil motor (VCM). The bandwidth of such systems is typically limited to less than 1 kHz by the mechanical dynamic of the actuator and at some point the VCM system is unable to compensate for disturbances to keep the head on track. To reach the projected track densities, it has been theoretically predicted that several kHz of loop bandwidth will be required. Such bandwidths can be achieved by a new scheme called dual-stage actuation, in which a small secondary actuator is added between gimbal and slider to provide fast track control [4-5]. Dual-stage actuation approaches for magnetic disk drives are currently being considered by the magnetic recording industry. Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) actuator is a promising approach for dual-stage actuation. MEMS devices can use electromagnetic or electrostatic techniques to convert an applied voltage into physical movement. The actuated slider approach can achieve a truly collocated second stage actuation of the read/write head [5].
